Eine junge Japanerin wird unerwartet von ihrem Mann verlassen und zieht mit ihrer dreijährigen Tochter in eine Wohnung im obersten Stockwerk eines Mietshauses. Diese «zu jeder Tageszeit von Licht durchflutete» Wohnung wird ihr zu einer wichtigen emotionalen Stütze für das folgende Jahr, in dem sie versucht, sich von ihrem Mann gefühlsmässig zu lösen und sich auf ein Leben ohne ihn einzustellen.
Dabei wird ihr erst bewusst, wie stark sie sich bisher in allen Lebensbereichen auf ihn abgestützt hat. In der konfliktreichen Auseinandersetzung mit ihrer Umwelt, die ihr als alleinerziehender Mutter nun ganz anders begegnet, findet sie allmählich den Mut, in die Scheidung einzuwilligen und in ein neues, selbstbestimmtes Leben aufzubrechen.

- Very good: A book that looks new but has been read. Cover has no visible wear. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins, possible very minimal creasing.
