by Max Tessier

For the French spectator, Japanese cinema is reduced to the masterpieces of the 1950s that he has seen, from Seven Samurai to Journey to Tokyo via Tales of the Wave Moon After the Rain, and produced mainly, whether "jidai-geki" (period films) or "gendai-geki" (films with contemporary themes), by Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi or Yasujiro Ozu. However, Japanese cinema is not limited to these three great filmmakers, nor to Kon Ichikawa, Tadashi Imai, Teinosuke Kinugasa, Masaki Kobayashi, Mikio Naruse, Nagisa Oshima, Kaneto Shindo and a few others, including the films have reached us. From its origins to the present day, Japanese cinema has also been a cinema of remakes (we count films which have not been the subject of at least one) and genres: sword films, "yakusa" films and "porn novels", ghost films, monster films (Godzilla!) and war films, from Pearl Harbor to Hiroshima. It is all these images, brought together and commented on by Max Teissier, strange or familiar, violent or refined, modest or erotic, signed by the most prestigious artists as well as by the most obscure artisans, that this work invites you to discover.
