Ii Naoyuki (1953 auf Kyushu in Japan geboren) lehrt neben seiner Autorentätigkeit Kreatives Schreiben an der Tokai Universität in Tokio. Bereits für sein 1983 veröffentlichtes Debüt Kusa no kanmuri (Das Gras-Radikal) erhielt er den Gunzo-Literaturpreis für neue Autoren, weitere Auszeichnungen folgten (1989 Noma-Literaturpreis, 1994 Hirabayashi Taiko-Preis, 2000 Yomiuri-Literaturpreis). Mit „Der Schatten der blauen Katze“ liegt Ii Naoyuki nun erstmals auch in deutscher Übersetzung – von Till Weingärtner – vor. „Die Lücke zwischen uns und den Großen klafft einfach immer mehr auseinander.
