Der Band ist Teil des auf mehrere Lieferungen angelegten Großen Lexikons des Buddhismus, bei dem es sich primär um eine Übertragung eines japanischen Nachschlagewerks, des Sogo bukkyo daijiten, handelt. Dem Konzept entspricht, dass die Geschichte des Buddhismus in Japan eine besondere Rolle spielt. Der Band Zeittafeln und Karten ist freilich keine Übersetzung. Vielmehr handelt es sich um eine ? primär für deutsche Leser und Leserinnen bestimmte ? Ergänzung. Aber wenn auch das japanische Original weder Tafeln noch Karten einschließt, so orientiert sich der Band doch an ihm. Er berücksichtigt so gut wie alle auf Japan bezogenen Eintragungen des Originals und anderes mehr. Er bietet eine Übersicht der wichtigsten im Original eingeschlossenen auf China und Indien bezogenen Eintragungen ? und erneut auch andere, gerade für den ?westlichen" Leser interessante Informationen. Natürlich ist der Band auch isoliert nutzbar: eben als Angebot chronologischer und geografischer Übersichten.
