矛盾と対立とにみちたモダン・アートの意義を理解するうえに、感受性に貫かれたハーバート・リードの評論活動は独自な普遍性と影響力をもっている。本質的にロマン主義者のリードはシュルレアリスムの運動に積極的に接近し、また一方では構成主義のなかに究極の実の現われを認め、またインダストリアル・デザインと機能的美学を推進するかたわら新しい美術教育の理を展開したのであった。
「芸術の意味」は著者の最初の造形芸術論といってよいもので、1931年にロンドンのフェーバー＆フェーバー社から刊行された。詩人として出発したリードは第一次世界大戦に出征し、1918年に帰還すると、その翌年に大蔵省に就職して1922年まで勤務した。そののちヴィクトリア・アンド・アルバート美術館に転職、陶器とステンドグラスの部門を扱うことになった。陶器のような地味で自意識の少ない芸術は、絵画の傑作よりも時代をよく代表していること、しかもこうした限られた一分野の綿密な研究は却って芸術全体を把握するのに理想的な方法であることを悟った、とリードは述懐している。こうしてBBCの週刊誌「リスナー」に連載しはじめた造形芸術論が、この「芸術の意味」であった。
この邦訳は1957年の初刷いらい、多くの版を重ねて、美術史をまなぶ人の必読書となった。芸術が生活の大きな重要部分となった現在、美術史の流れ全体をみわたし、かつ一貫した詩人の魂による解明は、たえず人間の原点を指し示している点で、何人にもよい伴侶となるであろう。
