「尊厳」とは何か――簡単な疑問では、「安らかに死ぬ権利」というのは、肉体的にか精神的にか、それとも社会的にか経済的にか、という側面で異なってくる。ある人は肉体的にといい、またある人は精神的にとなる。尊厳の意味が異なってくるのだ。(中略)たとえば、老人病院の狭いベッドに寝たきりにされ、腕には点滴の注射をうたれ、膀胱カテーテルも挿入され、人口延命装置に囲まれて生命を保っている老人患者がいたとしよう。すでに意識も曖昧になるときがある。かつては社会的に活動したであろうこの老人も、見た目には「生ける屍(しかばね)」である。この老人患者には、「人間としての尊厳」が失われている。延命だけの医療はやめるべきだと、私は思う。しかし、この老人患者自身は、たとえそういう状態であっても、別に「自分には尊厳は失われていない」と考えているかもしれない。――本書より
